THE BASIC GUIDELINES FOR THE PREPERATION FOR A LITERARY APPRECIATION EXAM

SOME OF THE QUESTIONS YOU MAY FIND IN PAPER 2 ENGLISH

  1. Supply the appropriate title for the excerpt
  2. Describe what is happening in the excerpt
  3. Identify and illustrate the characters (characterization), i.e.

a.     names

b.     traits of a main characters

c.     roles of the characters

  1. Identify and illustrate themes in the excerpt.
  2. Identify and illustrate the stylistic devices/features of style/narrative techniques/language devices
  3. Describe the  significance of the stylistic devices
  4. Describe the events that lead up to the events in this excerpt
  5. Describe what happens later after the events in this excerpt
  6. Explain the meaning of the words in the excerpt with contextual meaning

GRAMMAR IN THE EXCERPT

Some of the topics covered in the grammar question in the excerpt include:

        1. Direct speech

        2. Indirect speech

        3. types of sentences for example statements, question tags, questions, positive statements, etc.

   

 STOCK ANSWERS IN LITERARY APPRECIATION QUESTION:

In paper three, some of the questions can take stock answers. however, a good candidate must always illustrate his responses.

1.     Role of characters:

a.     Develop a certain theme: identified in the events he is involved in

b.     Develop the plot: participants in the events that are taking place

c.     Sometimes he is the voice of reason of the author

d.     Develop traits of certain characters; highlight the traits i.e. without them, plot will be hanging or, certain traits would not be highlighted or revealed.

2.     Significance of features of features of style

a.     Develop plot; e.g. songs

b.     Develop other features of style; e.g. rhyme – rhythm

c.     Develop or emphasize themes; message in the sentence containing the stylistic device

d.     May emphasize or reveal traits; e.g. sarcasm

POINTS TO NOTE

The following points must be noted by any candidate who aspires to do well in literature: pp2

  1. Tense in writing responses or discussing
  2. Titles are short
  3. Spell names correctly and punctuate them correctly
  4. Illustrate your responses
  5. Respond to all the questions
  6. Word class of themes, and traits, and mood, and tone, and feelings, and attitude
  7. Categories of characters include groups
  8. Identifying important words: specify category e.g. noun, followed by verbs, etc
  9. Misspelling of words by splitting compound words e.g. ‘business man’
  10. Peaceful vs. peaceable
  11. How to illustrate vivid description: mention the category of imagery and how it forms mental images that emphasize either a theme or trait
  12. Direct and indirect speech
  13. Characters cannot be bundled together as one even if they are so closely related
  14. He is hard working not he is a hard working person
  15. Traits should not be stroked unless they are indeed the same
  16. What leads up to: that which is precursor, cause, motive, etc.
  17. What happens later: the logical consequence of the events in the excerpt as opposed to what appears afterward on the page
  18. Indirect speech joins speech tag with speech by use of the word ‘that’
  19. Your assignment has to be fully filled in the expected blanks for easy remedial action by teacher
